A woman recently shared her experience of undergoing intentional rib fracture surgery to reshape her waistline.
Known as RibXcar or rib remodeling, this minimally invasive procedure aims to enhance waistline definition without removing ribs. While gaining popularity, the technique is still relatively new and not widely practiced. Although generally considered low risk, potential complications include chronic pain, visible scars, an unnatural appearance, and loss of rib protection function.
Following the surgery, patients are advised to wear a tight corset for three months to control the desired reduction in waist size. Patients can typically achieve a waist reduction of up to five inches within this period. It is crucial for individuals to conduct thorough research and seek treatment only from certified plastic surgeons.
In efforts to regulate cosmetic surgery practices, the Daily Mirror initiated a campaign in November 2024 to advocate for stricter rules and enhance patient safety in the UK. The campaign also supports government initiatives to educate the public about the risks associated with “medical tourism.”
The 25-year-old woman, identified as Natalie Y, disclosed that she extensively researched the procedure and has a background in the industry. Working as a medical assistant for board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Sterry in New York, Natalie had undergone previous cosmetic treatments under his care.
Expressing her motivation for the surgery, Natalie explained dissatisfaction with her body shape, particularly excess fat in her flanks and upper back. Despite regular exercise, she struggled to achieve her desired physique. Seeking a solution, she consulted Dr. Sterry, who suggested the rib remodeling procedure to sculpt an hourglass figure by contouring her ribs.
While initially shocked, Natalie’s friends supported her decision. She became Dr. Sterry’s first rib remodeling patient in New York, with the treatment starting at $9,900 (£7,459) excluding additional costs for liposuction.
Reflecting on her recovery journey, Natalie admitted experiencing moments of self-criticism but ultimately embraced her transformed appearance. She noted a significant reduction in her waist size and a newfound confidence, describing the outcome as life-changing.
