An outburst of excitement filled Canada Life Centre on Saturday evening when local hero Simon Hildebrandt made a game-changing three-point shot for the Winnipeg Sea Bears, securing their historic victory in the Canadian Elite Basketball League championship. The arena erupted in cheers, confetti filled the air, and the iconic anthem “We Are the Champions” resonated through the speakers as fans and players rejoiced over the team’s 98-84 triumph.
Reflecting on the momentous shot, Hildebrandt described it as a surreal experience, mentioning how his mind went blank before the celebrations ensued. This victory marked a significant milestone for the Sea Bears, representing their first CEBL title since the league’s inception in 2023.
Notably, this victory carried sentimental value as it echoed the spirit of late player Chad Posthumus, another Winnipeg native who scored the game-winning basket in the team’s inaugural season. Hildebrandt acknowledged Posthumus’ legacy, emphasizing the emotional significance of following in his footsteps by clinching the championship-winning shot.
Head coach Mike Raimbault, who shares coaching duties at the University of Winnipeg, paid tribute to Posthumus by involving his parents in the postgame festivities. Raimbault expressed that if Posthumus could have chosen who would make the game-winning shot, he believed it would have been Hildebrandt, underscoring the profound connection between past and present players.
In a remarkable display of skill and resilience, Sea Bears guard Xavier Moon delivered a stellar performance, scoring 29 points in the championship game and earning the coveted title of CEBL finals MVP. Overcoming challenges due to the absence of key players, including Teddy Allen, Moon’s exceptional leadership and contribution were pivotal in the team’s journey to victory.
The Sea Bears’ path to glory was further embellished by their record-breaking attendance of 12,519 enthusiastic fans at the Canada Life Centre, surpassing the previous league record set in 2024. Owner David Asper expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments, highlighting the community support and dedication that fueled their success.
Looking ahead, Hildebrandt aspires to inspire aspiring basketball players in Winnipeg, emphasizing that hard work and perseverance can pave the way for achieving remarkable feats on the national stage. The Sea Bears’ triumphant victory not only signifies a historic milestone for the team but also serves as a beacon of hope and motivation for aspiring athletes in the Manitoba capital.
