Broadband has become an indispensable aspect of our daily lives, supporting activities like streaming entertainment, remote work, home security through internet-connected devices, and managing smart home technologies like lighting and heating.
As households increasingly embrace internet-connected gadgets and online content streaming, the demand for fast and reliable broadband access is on the rise. However, not all internet service providers (ISPs) deliver the same level of performance.
A recent analysis by SpeedGo, a new broadband speed-testing platform, reveals disparities in ISP performance. According to SpeedGo’s data, Virgin Media leads the UK in average download speeds, boasting an impressive 256.5Mbps. This speed allows users to download a full HD movie in just over two minutes, significantly faster than the national average.
Following Virgin Media, Vodafone takes the second spot with average download speeds of 175Mbps, and BT (EE) ranks third. TalkTalk lags behind with an average speed of nearly 95Mbps.
The average download speeds of major UK ISPs are as follows:
– Virgin Media: 256.5Mbps
– Vodafone: 175.1Mbps
– BT (EE): 122.5Mbps
– Sky Broadband: 113.6Mbps
– TalkTalk: 94.7Mbps
In addition to download speeds, SpeedGo also examined upload speeds, crucial for users who frequently transfer large files or work remotely. Vodafone leads in this category with an average upload speed of 83.6Mbps, surpassing Virgin Media, which holds the second position with 47.2Mbps.
SpeedGo affirmed these results, stating that Virgin Media provided the fastest broadband internet in the United Kingdom in 2025, with an average download speed of 256.5Mbps. Vodafone achieved the highest average upload speed at 83.6Mbps.
