The incident unfolded on Spring Street just after 4 pm local time, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities reported a possible car fire at the scene, with the suspect barricading himself inside the vehicle while officers worked to establish communication with him as of 5 pm.
Mayor Karen Bass provided updates on the unfolding events, stating that City Hall was being evacuated as a precautionary measure. She expressed gratitude towards the first responders present at the scene and assured ongoing monitoring of the situation. The suspect was later taken into custody, with the LAPD bomb squad deployed to the area to ensure safety.
The California Highway Patrol took action to close off-ramps leading to the vicinity, as per reports. The suspect, who remains unidentified, made demands for a reporter with a camera to be brought to the scene before cooperating.
