Gian van Veen emerged victorious at the European Championship after a remarkable win over Luke Humphries. The 23-year-old Dutch player demonstrated remarkable composure to clinch an 11-10 victory against the top-ranked player in the world.
The tension was palpable at Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle as Van Veen staged a comeback from a 4-1 deficit, faced missed opportunities, and witnessed Humphries forcing a decisive set. However, Van Veen displayed unwavering nerves to hit a double 16 and claim his first major title.
Reflecting on his win with ITV Sport, the emotional young talent expressed his astonishment, stating, “Crazy. I said it to my girlfriend when I walked on stage, whenever I win my first TV title, I wouldn’t cry and here I am crying. I will never forget this moment or even this crowd. It is phenomenal to win my first major in Germany.”
Acknowledging Humphries’ skill, Van Veen praised his opponent, saying, “I said to Luke after the game, when he hit the bull to go 10-10, that is why he is world number one. That’s how amazing person Luke is. It is definitely a night to never forget.”
In a gracious gesture, Luke also acknowledged his opponent’s performance, commenting, “I was hoping he was gonna s*** himself at the end there but he didn’t! I’m devastated, I’m gutted, but I’m accepting of defeat.”
Van Veen’s triumph comes with a significant £120,000 prize, propelling him to seventh in the PDC Order of Merit, a climb of eight spots and inching closer to a top-five position.
Despite facing challenges en route to the final, including a minor injury to his throwing hand during a match, Van Veen overcame tough opponents like Damon Heta, Ryan Searle, and Michael van Gerwen. His determination and resilience were evident as he navigated through the competition and ultimately claimed the European Championship title.
The injury, although a concern at one point, did not hinder Van Veen’s performance in the final showdown against Humphries. His ability to stay focused and deliver under pressure showcased his mental strength and determination to emerge victorious in the prestigious tournament.
