Vladimir Putin faced embarrassment on his birthday as a distant drone strike hit Russia from a distance of 1,200 miles. Ukrainian suicide drones targeted the city of Tyumen in Siberia, prompting a significant emergency response. Reports indicate that three drones were shot down over an industrial site, with visuals showing charred debris and locals recounting explosions and fire engine sightings.
Simultaneously, Russia retaliated by launching missiles towards Ukraine to mark Putin’s 73rd birthday on October 7. Ukrainian officials disclosed that Iskander missiles and over 150 strike drones were directed at Ukraine, managing to breach air defenses.
This drone assault ranks among the lengthiest in the ongoing conflict, following a 1,100-mile strike in August. Additionally, a previous attack on the Belaya Air Base in eastern Siberia on June 1, as part of Kyiv’s ‘Operation Spiderweb’, covered a distance of 2,700 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Despite the imagery from the incident, Russian authorities downplayed the impact of the drone strike. Local reports from Tyumen Oblast mentioned that three drones were downed, and there was no fire at the unspecified industrial site, clarifying that the Antipinsky oil refinery was not affected.
Russia also asserted that nearly 200 Ukrainian drones were intercepted, with some targeting the Krasnodar region, home to Putin’s opulent palace residences, leading to the closure of Sochi airport.
Dzerzhinsk in the Nizhny Novgorod region faced another wave of attacks, following Ukraine’s strike on a major Russian explosives manufacturer a day prior, involving various munitions components. Reports also indicated Ukrainian strikes on Moscow, the Kursk region, and Stary Oskol in the Belgorod region.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at supplying long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, with conditions on target selection, defying warnings from Putin about potential repercussions on their relationship. Trump emphasized the need to ascertain the missiles’ usage without seeking escalation.
Putin had previously cautioned that such actions would harm bilateral relations and jeopardize positive developments. He emphasized that the outcome hinges not solely on Russia but on various factors.
