“UK Braces for Snow: Major Cities, Including London, in Path”

Date:

Advanced weather modeling indicates that a significant amount of snow is set to impact the UK soon, reaching various major cities possibly including London.

According to the GFS weather model maps, snow is forecasted to move through Scotland on Tuesday afternoon, affecting cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh before progressing southward to northern England. The snowfall is expected to continue moving south into Wednesday morning, affecting regions such as Northern Ireland, Wales, the Midlands, and even the southeast of England.

Snow coverage projections for Wednesday afternoon show snow accumulation in cities like London, Ipswich, Greater Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeen among others.

Although widespread snow is anticipated to diminish by Thursday, the GFS weather model suggests that some flurries may persist in the North York Moors, northeast England, and northeast Scotland.

Data indicates the likelihood of up to 18cm of snow settling on high ground in Scotland, with the Pennines in England potentially receiving around 9cm. However, major cities and towns are expected to see less than 1cm of snow accumulation if it does settle.

BBC Weather forecasts “wintry showers” across various areas during the upcoming week. The outlook for Tuesday to Thursday includes showery rain spreading southeastwards on Tuesday, potentially turning wintry on northern hills, especially overnight. Wednesday is expected to be cold and mostly dry, with occasional wintry showers along coastal regions, and Thursday is projected to be another cold day with a possibility of lingering wintry showers in the east.

Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis mentioned that Monday will be dry and sunny yet chilly for many, while Tuesday and early Wednesday will bring showery rain, turning into sleet and snow over northern high ground as it clears. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be colder, with wintry showers near coasts but mostly dry, sunny, and cold inland. Overnight frost is likely to be widespread throughout the week.

The Met Office also predicts cold weather and snow. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley stated that as Storm Claudia moves south, high pressure from the northwest will usher in a cold northerly flow from the Arctic across the UK. This shift is expected to bring much colder conditions compared to recent days, with a risk of wintry elements such as snow and ice. Widespread frosts are anticipated, with temperatures possibly dropping as low as -7C in some areas next week, while daytime temperatures are likely to remain in single figures nationwide. The addition of a brisk northerly wind will result in a significant wind chill effect, marking a notable shift in weather following a prolonged period of above-average temperatures.
