“UK Braces for Snow: Expert Tips for Safe Winter Driving”

Date:

The upcoming week in the UK is anticipated to bring a significant amount of snow, as indicated by the Met Office. The forecast suggests that regions such as Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and potentially North Wales could experience snowfall in what is described as a widespread wintry period. Given this forecast, Mike Thompson, Chief Operating Officer at Leasing Options, emphasizes the importance of preparing vehicles for the harsh weather conditions, including thoroughly clearing snow to avoid potential fines.

While many individuals often turn to social media for snow driving tips, seeking expert advice is crucial. Thompson highlights the challenges of driving in snowy conditions and offers insights on adapting to changing weather, from emergency vehicle preparation to safer driving practices.

Thompson suggests that fitting winter tires on vehicles is an effective safety measure during heavy snowfall or icy conditions. Winter tires are designed to provide better grip in extreme weather, reducing the risk of skidding and enhancing overall control.

To ensure vehicle readiness for colder months, Thompson recommends topping up with windshield wash and anti-freeze. Using winter-specific screen wash prevents freezing on the windshield and effectively removes tough substances, while antifreeze protects the engine from freezing.

Throughout winter, maintaining an emergency kit in the car is essential for managing unforeseen situations. Items such as an ice scraper, shovel, toolkit, blanket, warm clothes, flashlight, and a first aid kit can significantly enhance safety and comfort in case of accidents or breakdowns.

Before embarking on a journey, Thompson advises drivers to clear snow and ice from their vehicles to maintain optimal visibility while driving. Failure to do so can result in fines and penalty points.

Additionally, drivers are reminded to clear the roof of their cars, as snow accumulation can slide onto the windshield, obstructing the view. When driving in snowy conditions, reducing speed, making gentle maneuvers, and exercising caution during acceleration and braking are crucial to avoid skidding.

Maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, adjusting driving speed for control, and calmly steering in the direction of skidding can help drivers navigate safely in snowy and icy conditions.
