UK Braces for Siberian Cold Front: Snow & Icy Conditions Ahead

Date:

Images depicting the initial snowfall in a Siberian cold front have emerged as temperatures are projected to drop to -10C this week.

Residents in the UK are bracing for icy conditions and snowstorms with multiple yellow weather warnings in effect due to the sudden onset of cold weather. The upcoming week’s weather is anticipated to be notably colder, with severe frost expected later in the week, according to the Met Office. A map illustrates temperatures plummeting to -10C in Scotland by Wednesday as meteorologist Alex Burkill explains that frigid air originating from Siberia is making its way to the UK after traversing the Arctic Ocean.

Individuals are advised to be cautious of icy patches as a yellow warning is in place for parts of Scotland and northern England until midday. The warning highlights the potential for rain and hill snow on frozen surfaces, creating hazardous conditions on Tuesday morning.

Moreover, a snow and ice warning is active for northern Scotland from today through Thursday, cautioning of frequent snow showers that could lead to disruptions. Additionally, a current snow alert is in effect for central Scotland until 6pm, indicating possible transport and infrastructure disruptions in higher-altitude regions.

Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern and western England and Wales are expected to experience wet weather on Tuesday, with the likelihood of sleet and snow due to the prevailing cold air, as mentioned by Mr. Burkill.

Icy patches are anticipated nationwide on Tuesday, posing slippery conditions, with Scotland possibly seeing snowfall. While temperatures will be below average in the north, they are expected to be closer to normal in the southern regions on Tuesday.

Mr. Burkill anticipates a considerable drop in temperatures compared to the previous week, with an approaching low-pressure system bringing showery rain, sleet, and hill snow, mainly clearing southward by Wednesday morning.

Temperatures across the UK are forecasted to decrease by a few degrees on Wednesday, notably in the south, where it will be colder than usual for this time of year. Strong winds are expected, particularly in the west, potentially reaching gale force on Wednesday and Thursday, intensifying the cold weather conditions.

Thursday will likely witness sleet and snow in northern regions with showers in western areas, while Scotland and eastern northern England may experience snowfall, leading to potential disruptions. The night transitioning into Friday is expected to be exceptionally cold with widespread severe frost.

Rainfall is predicted to move across Northern Ireland and then progress into western Scotland, Wales, and England, with dry and brighter conditions in the east initially. However, rain is expected to arrive later in the day. Although more rain is on the horizon for the weekend, milder air will result in rising temperatures.
