“UK Braces for ‘Beast from the East’ Snowstorm Redux”

Date:

A weather event similar to the ‘Beast from the East’ snowstorm in 2018 may reoccur in the UK. The previous occurrence brought frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall across various regions.

Known as sudden stratospheric warming (SSW), this phenomenon involves a rapid warming in the stratosphere, affecting the polar vortex and potentially leading to prolonged cold spells and snowfall. The Met Office explains that SSW causes Arctic conditions by influencing the jet stream and creating blocking patterns.

Forecaster Nick Finnis predicts a potential SSW event around November 25 and 26, shifting the polar vortex towards northern Russia and north-east Europe. While colder weather is expected, it may not reach the extreme levels seen in 2018.

Ahead of a possible SSW event, snow is forecasted for the upcoming week in the UK, particularly in northern regions. The Met Office anticipates rain, hill snow, and icy conditions, with cold temperatures persisting throughout the week.

BBC Weather forecasts showery rain spreading south-eastwards on Tuesday, turning wintry in northern hills. Wednesday will be cold and dry for most areas, with occasional wintry showers along the coast. Thursday is expected to be chilly with a chance of lingering wintry showers in the east.
