A tragic incident unfolded as a couple was discovered lifeless in a hot bathtub shortly after celebrating their daughter’s birthday. The deceased individuals, identified as Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, and Ana Carolina Silva, 41, were found in a motel room on August 11. Medical professionals determined that heatstroke and organ failure were contributing factors to their deaths. Concern arose when their family reported them missing after failing to pick up their daughter.
The couple had spent the evening celebrating their daughter’s fourth birthday at a food park and later went to a nightclub. After dropping off their child at Jeferson’s sister’s home, they checked into the Dallas Motel in São José, Brazil, around midnight.
Authorities initiated a missing persons inquiry and located the couple deceased in the bathroom. Investigators revealed that Jeferson, a military police officer, and Ana Carolina, a nail salon owner, had lost consciousness in the 50°C water while a space heater was operating.
A toxicology report mentioned by Globo G1 disclosed elevated alcohol levels and cocaine traces in their bodies. Forensic tests ruled out potential causes of death such as electric shock, drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning, or foul play. The Chief Medical Examiner of Brazil, Andressa Boer Fronza, stated that the deaths resulted from exogenous poisoning, leading to heatstroke, dehydration, thermal collapse, organ failure, and eventual demise.
Chief of Police Felipe Simão Gomes emphasized that the circumstances and substances found on the bodies indicated a sudden cause of death with no third-party involvement. The couple, who had been together for nearly two decades, were known as devoted parents with no history of violence.
Ana Carolina’s family disputed claims of her being a habitual drug user and raised concerns about possible coercion to ingest cocaine. Chief Simão suggested that their physical constitutions might not have been compatible with the substances, especially when mixed with alcohol.
