Severe floods in a popular region of Spain have resulted in the tragic death of a young boy and the disappearance of his father. The Cataluna area in the northeast has been heavily affected by storms, causing chaos for British tourists with flight disruptions. The national weather agency, Aemet, issued a yellow warning as heavy rainfall up to 20 litres per hour has been recorded.
The body of a boy, believed to be around 11 or 12 years old, was discovered in the flooded River Anoia near Barcelona. Catalan Minister of the Interior, Núria Parlon, confirmed the finding and mentioned that the search for the boy’s father is ongoing. Reports indicate that the father’s car was swept away on a flooded road, prompting rescue teams to comb the area for his whereabouts.
Emergency services have been overwhelmed with distress calls, rescuing 27 individuals trapped at a funicular near Montserrat Monastery. The region saw significant rainfall, leading to transportation disruptions with flight delays and cancellations at Barcelona Airport, as well as train issues in Cataluna. Additionally, a group of around 50 passengers, including infants, got stranded on a train due to fallen trees.
Authorities have issued warnings for extreme caution near rivers and flood-prone areas due to high water levels. The alerts for the Cataluna region are in effect until early Tuesday morning.
