Counterterrorism authorities are currently looking into whether the individual responsible for the synagogue attack, known as Jihad Al-Shamie, had previously issued death threats to a Member of Parliament due to the MP’s stance on Israel.
The Conservative MP, John Howell, reportedly received a series of menacing emails after he voiced support for Israel’s right to self-defense. One of the emails was attributed to a person named “Jihad Alshamie,” who expressed that individuals like the MP deserved harm, though it remains uncertain if this individual is the same as the attacker.
Former MP John Howell, who represented Henley from 2008 to 2024, was offered police protection and removed the contact information for his local office from his website as a precaution.
Following the receipt of the threatening letter, Mr. Howell emphasized the seriousness of such threats, stating, “The last thing I want to seem like is dramatic, but one must take a threat seriously when it suggests a desire for one’s demise.”
Commending the Thames Valley Police for their excellent security guidance, Mr. Howell mentioned, “If I ever feel unsafe, there can be a police officer present during my district office hours.”
During a recent television appearance, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that Al-Shamie was not actively being investigated by counterterrorism agencies or security services and had not been referred to Prevent, a government program.
Jihad Al-Shamie was fatally shot by law enforcement after launching an assault on a synagogue in Manchester. The incident, classified as a terror attack by police, resulted in the deaths of two additional individuals.
The assault occurred on Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar, outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall.
