A heroic Ukrainian medic, known for establishing a volunteer ambulance group called “Taira’s Angels,” has urged Russia to be held accountable after enduring mistreatment while in Kremlin custody. Yuliia Paievska, aged 56, was captured by pro-Russia forces in Mariupol following the 2022 invasion and spent three months in captivity. She now focuses on supporting the mental well-being of Ukrainian military personnel as an officer.
During an emotional interview with the Mirror in London, Yuliia, also known as Taira, reflected on the challenges she has faced. She emphasized the importance of justice and restitution, comparing the current situation to past conflicts like World War Two. Yuliia highlighted the need for Russia to bear the consequences of its actions, drawing parallels between the impacts on Ukraine and historical events in the United Kingdom.
Yuliia recounted her harrowing experiences in captivity, where she was subjected to physical and psychological abuse. Despite the ordeal, she remains determined to speak out about the realities of Russian captivity. The footage captured by her bodycam before her capture, smuggled out discreetly, showcased her bravery and compassion in aiding both Ukrainian and Russian casualties on the battlefield.
Yuliia, who was due to participate in the 2022 Invictus Games before being captured, has a background in graphic design and has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts since Ukraine’s conflicts began in 2013. Her volunteer ambulance corps, Taira’s Angels, has been instrumental in saving numerous lives without resorting to violence.
Currently serving as a mental health officer in the military, Yuliia works closely with frontline troops and returning captives, offering personalized therapy based on her unique experiences of war and captivity. She remains dedicated to her role, viewing it as intricate and essential work akin to a craftsman’s precision.
Yuliia’s resilience and commitment were highlighted during the opening of the Indomitable Ukraine exhibition in London, where she shared her insights and experiences. Her unwavering determination to support her fellow servicemembers and advocate for justice continues to inspire those around her, underscoring the strength of her character and resolve.
