A woman was left fighting for her life after being attacked by a man who also killed her friend in a horrific incident. The assailant later returned to the scene of the crime, appearing nonchalant among concerned neighbors.
Nearly 23 years later, the survivor of the brutal attack, who sustained 20 stab wounds, expresses fear of encountering the perpetrator if he is released from prison in County Cork, Ireland. This tragic event remains one of the most shocking unprovoked assaults witnessed in Ireland.
The perpetrator, Peter Whelan, aged 20 at the time, was ejected from a pub in Cork after attempting to assault a barman with a glass ashtray. On the same evening, Nichola Sweeney, who had recently moved to Rochestown from London, was at home with her friend Sinead O’Leary, 19, planning a night out.
As Nichola was in the bathroom applying makeup and Sinead was curling her hair on the bed, Whelan, unknown to the women, unexpectedly entered the Sweeney family home. He viciously attacked Sinead in the bedroom, repeatedly stabbing her.
Despite Nichola’s pleas, Whelan then turned on her, stabbing her multiple times, including a fatal wound to her heart. Sinead managed to barricade herself in a downstairs bathroom while Whelan fled the scene but later returned, providing directions to the police.
Whelan, who never expressed remorse for his actions, confessed to Nichola’s murder and the attempted murder of Sinead. Initially sentenced to 15 years for attempted murder, later reduced to 11, he is serving a life sentence for Nichola’s murder. Reports indicate his periodic supervised day releases and upcoming parole application.
Expressing concern, Sinead emphasizes the need for protective measures if Whelan is released, fearing for her safety and that of Nichola’s family. The victim’s brother, Sean, echoes the sentiment, stating Whelan’s potential danger if released. The Parole Board declined to comment on this specific case.
