Starting university can be an exciting and liberating experience, but a recent survey of 1,000 university graduates revealed that a staggering 80% wished they had been more informed about the realities of student life and better prepared. Insights from alumni highlighted essential items that facilitated their university journey, such as using a doorstop to foster a welcoming atmosphere and having earplugs for undisturbed sleep, especially during the bustling period of Freshers’ Week.
Research conducted by EXTRA identified key essentials for new students, including a laundry basket to manage the inevitable clothing pile-up and comfortable slippers to stay warm without cranking up the heating. Additional recommendations encompassed having flip flops for communal bathrooms and a stock of cold and flu remedies to combat the notorious fresher’s flu. Furthermore, mental readiness was emphasized as crucial alongside physical preparations.
Among the stressors faced by university students, a common challenge was keeping pace with social activities in the initial year, with a third of students finding financial management as the most significant adjustment. Uncertainty about choosing fresher’s societies and anxiety about forming new friendships were prevalent concerns among respondents.
In a bid to assist students in navigating the transitional phase, a popular chewing gum brand collaborated with student wellbeing advocate Ben West to offer expert tips for alleviating nerves during the initial weeks. West emphasized the efficacy of simple strategies like deep breathing, chewing gum, and taking walks to promote mindfulness and reduce stress levels.
West shared, “Embarking on the university journey is a momentous and thrilling step, and with a few coping mechanisms at your disposal, you can quiet the chaos and fully embrace the experience.” Practical advice included deep breathing exercises, carrying chewing gum for daily relaxation, engaging in physical movement, tuning into upbeat audio content, and actively participating in social events to foster new connections and integration into the university community.
