Substitute Teacher in Vermont Faces Drug Charges

Date:

A primary school substitute teacher in Vermont, Melissa Martin, faced charges of cocaine possession and reckless endangerment after allegedly bringing drugs into her classroom. Police responded to reports of an adult under the influence of drugs at the Barre Town Middle and Elementary School. Martin admitted to having cocaine in her jacket pocket when authorities arrived, and a subsequent search uncovered more cocaine in her possession. Barre Town Police Chief William Dodge cited her for possession of cocaine and reckless endangerment due to being under the influence while supervising students.

A concerned parent, identified as Brittany, revealed that her son, a student in Martin’s class, noticed the teacher’s erratic behavior and suspected drug use. The boy witnessed Martin almost falling asleep during the lesson and mistaking him for her pet dog when he followed her out of the classroom. The superintendent of the Barre Unified Union School District, Joan Canning, commended the child for reporting the incident promptly, emphasizing the importance of speaking up if something seems wrong.

Martin, who had been a permanent substitute teacher for about three years, was terminated following the incident. She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released under court conditions that prohibited her from entering school grounds. Despite the situation, Canning assured parents that their children’s safety was a top priority, as Martin was no longer associated with the school.
