Published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, the study indicates that while Tramadol may have a slight impact on reducing chronic pain, there is insufficient evidence to support its overall efficacy. Lead author Dr. Janus Jakobsen, a clinical professor at the University of Southern Denmark, highlighted the questionable benefits and potential harmful effects associated with Tramadol.
As an opioid, Tramadol carries the risk of addiction and is closely monitored by healthcare providers. In 2023, over 16 million Tramadol prescriptions were written in the US alone. The study examined 19 clinical trials involving more than 6,500 individuals with chronic pain and found that while Tramadol provided some pain relief, its effectiveness fell below clinically significant levels.
The research also revealed potential serious side effects of Tramadol, including cardiac events such as chest pain, heart disease, and congestive heart failure. With drug-related deaths on the rise, the study recommends minimizing the use of Tramadol and other opioids whenever possible.
Dr. Jakobsen emphasized the importance of exploring alternative treatment options before resorting to Tramadol, urging patients to consult their healthcare providers for personalized pain management strategies. The study’s findings underscore the need for cautious prescribing practices and individualized care for chronic pain sufferers.
