A man in his 40s has tragically passed away during Storm Amy’s impact on the UK and Ireland. The incident occurred in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, and emergency services responded promptly around 4:15pm.
The man’s body has been moved to the morgue at Letterkenny University Hospital for a post mortem examination. Authorities are conducting investigations, and the post mortem results will guide the next steps, with a file to be prepared for the coroner.
Storm Amy has brought strong winds and heavy rain to the British Isles, leading to power outages affecting around 50,000 properties in Northern Ireland. NIE Networks reported significant damage to the electricity networks, prompting an escalated response effort with additional staff deployed to manage customer queries.
In the Republic of Ireland, approximately 184,000 homes, farms, and businesses experienced power loss during the storm, particularly in counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Cavan, and Donegal. The ESB anticipates further power outages and restoration challenges due to hazardous weather conditions.
The UK Met Office warned of wind speeds potentially reaching 80mph along exposed coastal areas, posing risks of fallen trees and more power disruptions. Northern Ireland has a yellow wind warning in effect until midnight on Saturday, along with a yellow rain warning until midday on Saturday, with potential flooding concerns.
An amber wind warning was issued for specific regions, leading to school closures from noon for safety reasons. Storm Amy is expected to bring damaging winds with gusts of 60-70mph inland and up to 80mph along coasts, possibly impacting services like mobile phone coverage.
