Attention to those with a fear of spiders: The spider season has arrived, bringing unwanted guests into our homes. Fortunately, there is an affordable method to keep them at bay.
As autumn progresses in the UK, many people are embracing the cooler temperatures by wearing cozy clothes and enjoying spiced beverages. However, this season also signals an increase in spider activity indoors.
In the colder weather, these unsettling creatures seek warmth and shelter, infiltrating our living spaces and leaving behind their webs, causing discomfort for those afraid of spiders. Early autumn also signifies the beginning of spiders’ mating season, leading to a higher presence of them crawling around than usual.
Cleaning specialist Nancy Emery from Tap Warehouse explains: “With the arrival of sudden rain and cold spells, spiders are driven indoors, finding our homes to be an ideal refuge from the chilly autumn weather.
“Our homes also provide a safe environment for house spiders to reproduce during mating season, enabling them to thrive and expand their population in the warm corners of your residence.”
So, how can you effectively eliminate them? Nancy recommends using potent scents to repel these eight-legged creatures.
She suggests: “Certain strong scents are known to deter spiders. An easy, cost-effective, and non-toxic solution is to create a spider-repelling spray using water and white vinegar.”
White vinegar can effectively deter spiders due to its acetic acid content, which irritates them.
Nancy advises: “Fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water. The strong odor will discourage spiders from settling in your home. Spritz the mixture around windows, doors, and any other entry points where spiders may be entering.”
You probably have vinegar in your kitchen cupboard at home. If not, you can purchase a bottle of Distilled Vinegar from Tesco for 35p.
However, if you dislike the smell of vinegar, Nancy recommends using a mixture of peppermint oil and water as a “less pungent repellent.”
