“Son’s Fight for Veteran Justice Unveils Nuclear Test Injustices”

Date:

In 2006, I received a call from Craig Prescott seeking assistance to unravel the injustices prevalent in the world. He narrated the story of his late father, Roy, a victim of nuclear weapons testing, who passed away without receiving any war pension due to the Ministry of Defence’s denial of responsibility. Despite his efforts, Roy’s quest for justice remained unfulfilled until Craig, determined to fight for his father’s legacy, successfully secured a widow’s pension for his mother at an appeal hearing. The underlying issue was the disparity in compensation between British troops involved in American tests, with the former being neglected while the latter received due compensation.

Having previously worked as a defense reporter in Plymouth, I possessed insights into the workings of the MoD and an understanding of nuclear hazards. Craig’s unwavering dedication to his father’s cause left a deep impression on me.

The Mirror had been advocating for veterans since 1984, spearheaded by investigative reporter Paul Foot and later supported by prominent columnist Richard Stott. The plight of veterans, reporting health issues and birth defects linked to nuclear testing, gained prominence in the media. Roy, among 500 Royal Engineers exposed to Cold War weapon trials, represented a larger group of servicemen reporting similar health challenges, including cancer, miscarriages, and genetic anomalies in their offspring.

Subsequent legal battles, including a High Court case, shed light on the veterans’ struggles against MoD’s reluctance to acknowledge their suffering. Despite facing legal hurdles and government inertia, the veterans persisted in their pursuit of justice. Collaborating with The Mirror, the veterans’ campaign for recognition culminated in the issuance of a commemorative medal, albeit received with mixed feelings due to its perceived lack of honor and respect towards the veterans.

The medal initiative reinvigorated the veteran community, unraveling long-buried documents that exposed the truth behind the nuclear experiments and their detrimental effects on servicemen. This revelation sparked a significant movement known as the Nuked Blood Scandal, triggering official inquiries, police investigations, and the declassification of secret documents related to the testing. The ongoing campaign seeks to unveil the full extent of the injustices faced by the veterans and holds promise for further revelations and accountability in the future.

As I bid farewell to my column at The Mirror after 13 years, I extend my gratitude to the readers and the dedicated team behind the scenes who contributed to shedding light on these critical issues.
