Immersing herself in researching romance scams since 2010, Ruth established the ScamHaters United Facebook group to warn others. Within a week, 1,000 people joined the group. Ruth discovered common tactics scammers use, such as posing as military personnel or oil rig workers and fabricating sob stories to gain victims’ trust.
Despite the lack of financial recovery, Ruth’s guidance has empowered victims to sever ties with scammers. While advising victims to report scams to authorities, Ruth acknowledges the challenges of prosecuting scammers operating outside the UK. Actively monitoring scamming groups, Ruth exposes their deceptive practices and collaborates with global volunteers to aid victims.
