“Respecting Local Customs: A Journey Through Dubai and Abu Dhabi”

Date:

As I sat on a bench, preparing to enter the third largest mosque globally, a slight smile crossed my face as I took off my socks and handed them to a fellow traveler for security purposes.

The initial moments of our visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi were not what we had anticipated. Both dressed modestly in a headscarf and long attire, it came as a surprise when security required the smallest glimpse of ankles to be covered before entering the magnificent 82-dome structure.

Despite the minor inconvenience and a touch of sweat, it was a simple gesture to show respect for the local culture during our exploration. The interior of the mosque was a breathtaking blend of Mughal, Moorish, Ottoman, and Persian architectural influences, boasting intricate details like gold leaf spires and chandeliers resembling palm trees adorned with 24-carat gold plates and Swarovski crystals.

The grandeur of the £400 million mosque was awe-inspiring, especially during my nighttime visit when the entire facade was illuminated, enhancing its majesty.

According to Chiara Glorioso, the communications director for Hilton’s Conrad brand in Abu Dhabi, “Dubai dazzles with bright lights and a more relaxed atmosphere, while Abu Dhabi exudes a slower pace and is known as the cultural heart of the UAE.”

This sentiment resonated with my experience after spending four days in Dubai and transitioning to Abu Dhabi. Dubai, a hotspot for Western tourists, offered a bustling business and entertainment scene with vibrant nightlife, in contrast to the more tranquil and understated ambiance of Abu Dhabi, where signs of development were visible everywhere, notably in the construction projects scattered across the city.

During my stay at The WB Abu Dhabi on Yas Island, part of Hilton’s Curio collection, I was immersed in a Warner Brothers-themed paradise adjacent to the region’s largest indoor theme park. The hotel’s interior was enchanting, featuring a ceiling reminiscent of a purple sky akin to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, evoking a surreal cartoon-like atmosphere.

The Warner Brothers themed-hotel, a first of its kind globally, captured the essence of the park’s magic. From iconic movie memorabilia to themed rooms, the hotel provided a delightful experience. The rooms exuded style and luxury without overwhelming guests with memorabilia, offering modern amenities and stunning views of the park.

The dining experience at The WB Abu Dhabi was exceptional, with themed dishes and an array of culinary delights that catered to various tastes. The hotel also boasted a state-of-the-art fitness center for guests seeking to stay active during their stay.

In Dubai, my stay at The Waldorf Astoria in the international financial center offered panoramic views of the bustling cityscape, including iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall. The luxurious accommodations, contemporary design, and convenient location made it a perfect base for exploring the city.

The culinary highlight at The Waldorf Astoria was the Bull & Bear restaurant, where I savored a delectable lamb Wellington recommended by the enthusiastic waiter, a dish that left a lasting impression on my taste buds.

From cultural landmarks to fine dining experiences and unique accommodations, both Dubai and Abu Dhabi have much to offer visitors of all ages. Just remember to adhere to local customs, even if it means handing over your socks for a memorable experience.

For travel arrangements, Emirates offers flights to Dubai from various UK cities, with prices starting at £531 return. Additionally, rooms at the Hilton Dubai Palm Jumeirah hotel start at approximately £124 per night for those seeking a luxurious stay in Dubai.
