Passenger Phone Use in Cars Can Lead to Fines

Date:

On extended car journeys, it is common for passengers to spend their time using mobile phones. Typically, the person in the front seat will be engrossed in their phone screen, which is usually acceptable behavior. However, there are situations where passengers could face consequences.

Although drivers are strictly prohibited from using phones while driving, it is less known that passengers can also be fined under certain circumstances. This can occur if a passenger distracts the driver with their phone, such as showing something on the screen or playing loud music or videos.

Fines can reach up to £1,000 if police determine that a passenger’s phone use has caused driver distraction. A representative from BigWantsYourCar.com highlighted that many drivers are unaware that passengers can also be penalized for phone use that diverts the driver’s attention.

Passengers, especially driving instructors, are prohibited from using phones as their primary focus should be on supervising learners and the road, according to Chronicle Live reports. Drivers are advised to securely mount phones in proper holders for navigation to avoid obstructing their view, as improper placement can lead to fines and penalty points.

It is essential to exercise caution when using phones in the car and avoid distracting the driver unless the vehicle is completely stationary. Maintaining focus on the road at all times is crucial for driver safety until reaching the final destination. Remember, safety first!
