A couple faces manslaughter charges following the tragic death of their daughter, who was reportedly crushed by her own bed. The child, who had autism and required supervision, was found alone for an extended period. Paramedics attempted CPR upon arrival at the family residence, but noted the girl’s body had stiffened, indicating she had passed away earlier than reported.
Law enforcement discovered a strong smell of urine and feces in the bedroom, which contained only a safety bed and soiled mattresses. The affidavit filed against Darcy Cross, 57, and Heather Cross, 49, highlighted these concerning conditions. Heather informed Minnesota investigators that her daughter had a habit of smearing feces, attributing it to the child’s autism and sleep issues that prompted the use of safety beds.
According to court records, Heather mentioned giving the 10-year-old her medication and a bottle between 4am and 6am before checking on the girls at 9am. Darcy claimed he found his daughter deceased when he returned from mowing the lawn at around 4.30pm, describing her position under the bed frame in a yoga-like posture.
The affidavit reported that the child, with high needs, was left unattended for 10 to 12 hours, contradicting the parents’ claims of regular check-ins. Text messages allegedly show Heather knew about the broken bed frame despite her denial to the authorities.
Upon inspecting the bed with a warrant, investigators discovered all four metal poles meant to secure the frame were broken, leading to the fatal incident. The parents are scheduled to appear in court on October 1, while their other daughter has been taken into protective custody.
