O2 has officially announced that millions of its customers are receiving a complimentary high-speed upgrade. This enhancement introduces faster 5G+ connectivity to users throughout the UK, offering improved mobile coverage and significantly quicker download speeds. O2 guarantees a 50% performance increase compared to the older 4G service.
In addition to speed and reliability improvements, the upgrade is expected to extend device battery life as they now consume less power by no longer requiring simultaneous connections to both 4G and 5G networks. This contrasts with traditional 5G, which relies on 4G support to function.
Customers equipped with 5G+ compatible devices and SIM cards can expect to receive this upgrade, which is currently rolling out in over 700 towns and cities.
Christian Hindennach, the Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, elaborated on the upgrade, stating, “Our 5G+ service is now accessible to millions of customers across the UK, and uniquely, it is available to all O2 customers across all Plans – unlike other providers. This enhancement improves performance in high-traffic areas, including large event venues, benefiting residents and visitors alike. It exemplifies Virgin Media O2’s dedication to enhancing our network and providing a more reliable user experience. We are investing £2 million daily to assist our customers in preparing for the next era of mobile innovation.”
To determine local availability, users can check using O2’s postcode tool. Some of the popular 5G+ compatible devices include the iPhone 15, 16 (including 16e), and 17 ranges, as well as the Google Pixel 9 series (including Fold) and the Google Pixel 10 series (including Fold).
5G+ denotes an upgraded iteration of 5G networks that utilizes advanced technologies such as higher-frequency spectrum, enhanced antennas, and network optimization to deliver faster speeds, reduced latency, and increased capacity.
