A Royal Caribbean cruise turned into a distressing experience for over 90 passengers due to an outbreak of highly-contagious norovirus. The incident occurred on the Serenade of the Seas ship, part of Royal Caribbean International, with 94 passengers and four crew members falling ill out of the total 1,874 passengers and 883 crew members onboard.
Norovirus symptoms, as per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), include diarrhea, vomiting, muscle aches, headaches, abdominal cramps, fever, and frequent loose stools. The ship’s itinerary included stops in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia before its scheduled arrival in Miami.
Following the outbreak, Royal Caribbean has implemented intensified cleaning and disinfection protocols in line with their outbreak prevention plan. Affected individuals have provided stool samples for testing, and those showing symptoms have been isolated. The cruise ship has also collaborated with the Vessel Sanitation Program overseen by the CDC for advice on sanitation procedures and reporting of cases.
Royal Caribbean emphasized its commitment to guest and crew safety, stating that strict cleaning measures exceeding public health standards are in place onboard their ships. The CDC reported a total of 19 gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships this year, with 14 attributed to norovirus.
