Michelle Tolley, a dedicated campaigner for victims of the NHS infected blood scandal, was elated to receive an award at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards. Alongside other campaigners, she won a Special Recognition Award last year for her tireless efforts in seeking justice for over 30,000 individuals affected by HIV and hepatitis C.
During the awards ceremony, Michelle and her fellow winners were surprised with an unexpected announcement. Hosts Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo revealed that each 2024 winner would receive a cruise holiday from P&O Cruises, the new headline partner of the awards.
The news came as a delightful shock to Michelle, who has faced years of health challenges and advocacy work. Infected with hepatitis C after a blood transfusion in 1987, she endured decades of illness before being properly diagnosed and treated. Despite the hardships, Michelle remained determined to make a positive impact and support others affected by the scandal.
The prospect of a relaxing holiday was a welcomed change for Michelle and her husband, Dean, who had not traveled abroad since their marriage in 1984. They decided to book a Canary Islands cruise holiday with P&O Cruises, where they also renewed their wedding vows.
The couple embarked on the Ventura cruise ship, enjoying the onboard amenities and exploring destinations like Madeira and the Canary Islands. From touring the banana-filled landscapes of Madeira to taking a tuk-tuk adventure in Las Palmas, Michelle and Dean embraced every moment of their holiday.
Their experiences, including a coach and river cruise in Lisbon, left them eager to repeat the cruise experience. Michelle praised the exceptional service, delicious food, and friendly staff onboard, encouraging others to embark on a cruise holiday for a fantastic and welcoming experience.
