“Next Trials AI Scanners Detecting Stolen Items in Undergarments”

Date:

Next is currently trialing advanced AI scanners that can identify stolen items concealed in undergarments such as bras and underwear by detecting changes in body temperature. This cutting-edge technology is capable of also detecting hidden weapons, explosives, cash, and drugs.

The innovative “Thruvision Passive Terahertz Screening System” has undergone successful testing in Next UK warehouses and distribution centers and may soon be implemented in stores. Steve Teatum, the Head of Group Loss Prevention at Next, discussed the system in a recent episode of the Retail Crime Uncovered podcast.

The new technology has proven highly effective in thwarting theft attempts, particularly those involving individuals concealing merchandise within personal body areas. This method had previously presented challenges for traditional security screening processes, making it difficult to detect illicit items.

Despite the ongoing issue of individuals attempting to steal in this manner, the implementation of this technology has significantly improved prevention measures. This development comes at a time when shoplifting in England and Wales has surged to its highest levels in over two decades, with reported offenses reaching 530,643 in the year ending March, marking a 20% increase.

Additionally, Home Bargains has taken proactive measures to combat theft at self-checkouts by installing AI cameras that can identify unscanned items. This initiative, part of a trial involving tech firms SAI and Everseen, aims to address the rise in retail crime. The technology is designed to detect discrepancies such as “misscans” and “skip scans” at self-checkout counters, providing alerts to staff.

Home Bargains operations director Paul Rowland noted the effectiveness of the technology compared to traditional security measures, emphasizing its role in deterring shoplifters. This move follows the retailer’s introduction of a confidential hotline for customers to report incidents of shoplifting and crime at their stores.
