“New ‘Stratus’ Covid Variant Spreading with Atypical Symptoms”

Date:

A novel variant of the Covid virus is rapidly spreading, accompanied by distinct symptoms that require attention. Concerns have been mounting regarding the emergence of the new Covid strain named ‘Stratus’, comprising two variations, XFG and XFG.3. Initially detected in January, the World Health Organization (WHO) flagged XFG in June for global monitoring due to its escalating prevalence.

As of 3 September, the UK Health Security Agency reported a 7.1% uptick in coronavirus cases in England compared to the prior week, though the exact impact of the XFG strain remains uncertain. Concurrently, health experts in Ireland observed 425 fresh infections in the first week of September, with the XFG variant attributing to the majority of new cases.

Typically, Covid symptoms mirror common respiratory ailments such as the flu, manifesting as fever, cough, sneezing, or a runny nose. Symptoms can vary in intensity, ranging from mild to severe. Notably, a distinguishing feature of Stratus is an initial hoarse or raspy voice, preceding traditional Covid signs and potentially being overlooked due to its atypical nature.

Medical professionals have documented additional symptoms associated with this variant, including nasal congestion, sore throat, gastrointestinal problems, and fatigue. Dr. Nye emphasized that individuals with this version often experience pronounced throat discomfort and hoarseness, differing from the conventional symptoms like cough, fever, and body aches.

Dr. Nye highlighted the increased virulence of this variant, suggesting a potential evasion of the immune system even in individuals with previous exposure. This characteristic diminishes the efficacy of existing vaccines, underscoring the importance of regular vaccination against the latest coronavirus strains as a crucial preventive measure.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Peter Chin-Hong from the University of California, San Francisco, cautioned about the broader spectrum of symptoms exhibited by Stratus compared to earlier variants. He noted an uptick in sore throats, particularly in unvaccinated older individuals. With heightened transmissibility, the likelihood of widespread infections is anticipated, especially as children return to school, where even minor symptoms could indicate a Covid infection.
