Mother of Tragedy Victims Urges PM on Child Safety

Date:

A mother of two children who were tragically killed by their father is urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to prioritize child safety. Claire Throssell, whose sons were murdered by their father during a court-approved visit, addressed MPs at the Labour Party conference, stressing the need to revise guidelines to prevent future tragedies.

In a heartbreaking incident in 2014, Claire’s sons, Jack, aged 12, and Paul, aged nine, lost their lives when their father set fire to their home, resulting in all three deaths. Claire, now 53 and residing in Penistone, Sheffield, is advocating for changes in legislation and a comprehensive review of the family justice system to safeguard children from abusive parents.

Expressing her anguish, Claire emphasized the flaws in the existing Children’s Act that prioritize contact with both parents, even in cases of known domestic abuse. Despite her warnings to authorities about the potential danger posed by her ex-husband, her concerns were overlooked, leading to the devastating loss of her sons.

Recent findings by Women’s Aid revealed a disturbing trend of child homicides by parents granted access despite a history of abuse. The report highlighted 19 additional child fatalities following the deaths of Jack and Paul, underscoring the urgent need for legal reforms to protect vulnerable children.

Claire’s unwavering advocacy led to a debate led by Labour MP Marie Tidball earlier this year, urging the removal of the family court’s default contact presumption. Reflecting on her sons’ bravery during the tragic event, Claire shared how Jack valiantly tried to save his brother, a poignant testament to their bond.

Determined to prevent further tragedies, Claire has authored a book titled “For My Boys,” set for release on October 9, calling for a shift in contact guidelines and a move away from the current pro-contact culture. Her tireless efforts, including a successful petition with over 100,000 signatures, have propelled the issue to national attention and parliamentary debate.

As she continues her crusade for child protection, Claire remains steadfast in holding the government accountable to their commitment to combat violence against women and girls. Her poignant plea echoes the urgency for concrete action to ensure every child’s right to safety and a future free from harm.
