A tragic incident unfolded when a mother of three was fatally attacked by a crocodile while fishing along a riverbank. The gruesome discovery of her partially consumed body occurred the following day.
The attack occurred in the morning of September 19th as the woman was fishing. Witnesses stated that locals attempted to rescue her upon seeing the attack but were unsuccessful.
According to Santanu Kumar Dalei, a forest range officer, the crocodile suddenly appeared and swiftly pulled her into the water before she could react. The victim, identified as Laxmi Dalei, was in the Gobari River near Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha, India, when the attack transpired.
Bhitarkanika, a vast saltwater swamp in Odisha, is known for its large crocodile population, with approximately 1,826 saltwater crocodiles inhabiting the area. Authorities advised that while crocodiles do not pose a threat to public safety if individuals stay out of the water, entering the water exposes them to risks.
Laxmi leaves behind her husband and three daughters. This incident follows another recent crocodile attack in Indonesia, where an 80-year-old man named Wasim was killed while bathing in a river near his home. The crocodile later paraded the victim’s body in front of shocked witnesses before being forced to release it by villagers armed with sticks.
Wasim’s son-in-law expressed shock at the tragedy, stating that it was an unexpected turn of events on what seemed like a normal day.
