Michigan Mother Killed by Stingray in Florida Boat Accident

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded during a family vacation as a mother of two lost her life in a bizarre accident involving a large stingray. Judy Kay Zagorski, aged 57 and from Michigan, was on a boat excursion in the Florida Keys with her loved ones when the unexpected event occurred.

The unfortunate occurrence occurred near Marathon, on Vaca Key’s Atlantic Ocean side, in the spring of 2008. Judy was seated at the front of the boat, which was traveling at approximately 25 mph, when a 75-pound spotted eagle ray, boasting a wingspan of about six feet, leaped out of the water and collided with her face, causing her to fall backward onto the boat’s floor.

Medical authorities confirmed that Judy did not display any signs of puncture wounds from the ray’s venomous barbs. The impact of the collision alone led to her tragic demise. The county’s medical examiner stated that Judy passed away instantly due to blunt force trauma, sustaining multiple skull fractures and direct brain injury, without being stung.

Judy’s sibling, Joyce Ann Miller, who was standing nearby, escaped unscathed. At the time of the incident, Judy’s father, Virgil Bouck, was steering the boat, while her mother, Verneta, was also present as the family enjoyed a spring holiday together.

Following the incident, the ray was also found dead on the boat. Wildlife authorities classified the event as a freak accident, as spotted eagle rays are not typically aggressive and employ their venomous tail barbs only in self-defense.

While these rays are known to jump out of the water to evade predators or remove parasites, collisions with humans are exceedingly rare. Spotted eagle rays can reach weights of up to 500 pounds with wingspans extending up to ten feet. Protected under Florida law, they usually swim peacefully near the ocean’s surface.

Judy’s unexpected death has deeply saddened both locals and visitors. Her brother, Dan Bouck, described her as an exceptional sister who volunteered with terminally ill patients and managed Beadle Bay Marina and Campground alongside her late husband, Steve Zagorski.

Experts stress that such accidents are highly uncommon. Although there have been isolated incidents involving rays landing in boats previously, fatalities are rarely reported.

This incident has sparked discussions reminiscent of other notable accidents involving marine life, such as the unfortunate passing of Steve Irwin in Australia.
