“Met Office Urges Residents: Pack 10 Car Essentials for Snow”

Date:

The Met Office has advised residents in 12 regions to have a set of 10 essential items in their cars to prepare for potential road delays caused by snow and ice in the upcoming days.

Multiple weather alerts are in effect until Thursday as snow spreads across the nation, accompanied by anticipated freezing temperatures. Apart from yellow weather warnings, the Met Office has issued a more severe amber warning for snow in Redcar and Cleveland, East Riding of Yorkshire, and North Yorkshire from 5 am to 9 pm on Thursday.

The warning indicates the possibility of up to 10 inches of snow in the North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire Wolds, potentially leading to disruptions. Yellow weather alerts cover Northern Ireland, sections of Wales, northern and southwest England, and most of Scotland.

Offering guidance on preparing for severe weather conditions, the Met Office recommended avoiding driving if possible. However, in case travel is necessary, it is crucial to allocate extra time to prepare, check the vehicle, and ensure all essential items are packed to deal with any potential delays.

Key items to have in the vehicle include warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest, and an in-car phone charger. This advice applies to various regions under weather warnings, including Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar, Orkney and Shetland, Strathclyde, Northern Ireland, Wales, South West England, North East England, Scottish Borders, Yorkshire and Humber.

Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong stated, “Cold Arctic air from the north is dominating the UK’s weather, ushering in the first significant cold spell this autumn and hinting at early winter weather. Consequently, winter hazards are expected in the next few days, with snow and ice posing particular risks, and the coldest conditions anticipated on Wednesday and Thursday.”

He added, “Wintry showers will affect areas exposed to the brisk northerly wind, especially Northern Ireland, southwest Wales, southwest England, northeast England, and across the northern half of Scotland. While not all regions will experience snow accumulation, frequent showers could result in 2-5cm of snow in some areas. Higher ground in Scotland may see accumulations of 15-20cm, with potential totals of 15-25cm over the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds.”

In addition to snow, ice remains a persistent hazard, particularly overnight, according to the Met Office. Mr. Armstrong continued, “Temperatures are significantly below average for this time of year, with rural parts of Scotland possibly dropping to as low as -11°C on Thursday night, and daytime temperatures remaining in the low single figures for many. Clear skies overnight could create challenging travel conditions due to icy surfaces.”

BBC weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood mentioned that the cold spell is expected to continue until the weekend, with temperatures rising back to double figures. Showers are projected to persist across various regions, potentially bringing snow to northern Scotland and other areas.
