Snow may make an appearance during Christmas week, according to the latest update from the Met Office. Initially, the weather service had indicated a low probability of snowfall over the festive period. However, a recent forecast suggests that dropping temperatures could enhance the chances of experiencing a White Christmas.
The Met Office now reports the potential for “wintry showers” in the eastern regions of the UK next week. Previously, the forecaster had deemed the likelihood of a widespread White Christmas as very slim.
Tom Crabtree, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, provided optimism to those eager for snow on Thursday. He mentioned that high pressure is anticipated to bring drier and less mild conditions for the Christmas period. While temperatures are expected to decrease, a significant drop is not foreseen. Overnight frosts are probable, along with the possibility of mist and fog in some areas, although extreme cold weather seems less likely.
Although falling temperatures could lead to wintry showers in the east, specific details for any particular day during the Christmas period are not yet clear. The last widespread White Christmas in the UK occurred in 2010, with an official White Christmas, defined by the Met Office as at least one snowflake falling on December 25, as recent as 2023.
The upcoming week’s Met Office forecast indicates that Monday will see further rain in some western areas, while the east is expected to remain mostly dry with occasional bright or sunny intervals. Temperatures are likely to hover around average levels for the most part.
Currently, a yellow weather warning for fog is in effect until 10 am in South East England, the East of England, the East Midlands, and South West England, including London. Additionally, a yellow warning for rain is valid in South West England and Wales until the end of the day.
Rebekah Hicks, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, highlighted that low-pressure systems will bring unsettled weather to the UK, with strong winds and heavy rain expected over the next few days. Today’s weather includes periods of heavy rain, especially over high ground in the western regions of Britain. Following recent wet conditions, travel disruptions and flooding are likely in parts of southwest England and south Wales. Widespread windy conditions are also anticipated, with coastal areas expected to experience gales.
