“Mediterranean Diet Rich in Fish Lowers Dementia Risk”

Date:

A recent study has highlighted a key food group that plays a vital role in reducing the risk of dementia. This category of food is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, known for their potential to protect brain health.

Dementia is a condition characterized by a decline in brain function, mostly affecting individuals over 65 years old. While age is a significant factor in dementia risk, lifestyle changes can influence around 45% of dementia cases, according to research.

Making dietary adjustments can have a significant impact on lowering the chances of developing dementia. A study published in the Alzheimer’s and Dementia journal in 2020 identified a critical dietary component that can help minimize the risk of cognitive decline.

Researchers found that following a Mediterranean-style diet can help prevent mental deterioration, with a specific food group standing out for its benefits. This diet typically includes fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, oily fish, and healthy fats like olive oil.

The Mediterranean diet, known for reducing the risk of various health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, was studied with over 7,750 participants over a span of up to 10 years.

The study involved detailed dietary assessments and cognitive evaluations to determine the most effective foods in preventing cognitive decline. Results showed that adhering to a Mediterranean diet was linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline, particularly with the consumption of fish associated with enhanced cognitive function.

Experts emphasized the importance of fish as the top dietary factor in reducing cognitive impairment risk, followed by vegetables. Fish consumption was specifically associated with decreased cognitive decline and impairment risk.

Further research highlighted the significance of fish as a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids beneficial for brain health. To enhance brain health and reduce dementia risk, the British Heart Foundation recommends limiting the intake of certain foods like fried food, cheese, red meats, pastries, and butter.

For individuals concerned about dementia, seeking advice from a GP when observing symptoms is recommended.
