A man, Ian Cleary, was sentenced to two to four years in prison in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for sexually assaulting a woman he had assaulted 12 years ago. Cleary, now 32, assaulted the woman in her university dorm room when she was 18 years old. After years of unpunished behavior, Cleary messaged the victim on Facebook in 2019, causing her distress and leading to his arrest.
The victim, in a court statement, expressed frustration with the system’s failure to protect her. Cleary, who previously worked for Tesla, could have faced up to 10 years in prison but received a lighter sentence. While the judge acknowledged Cleary’s remorse, the victim emphasized the long-lasting impact of the assault on her and her family.
Cleary, originally from California, completed his studies in Silicon Valley and returned to Pennsylvania to face the consequences of his actions. The victim, after waiting 12 years for accountability, expressed a mix of relief and disappointment at the outcome of the case.
