Maltesers have settled the long-standing debate on the correct way to enjoy the popular chocolate treat. A recent survey found that more than half of Maltesers fans prefer to suck on the treat without chewing, while a quarter opt to nibble on the chocolate coating before consuming the center, and another quarter choose to bite the sweet in half and eat each portion separately.
Despite these various techniques, the brand’s scientists have debunked them and revealed that the chocolate is designed to be consumed in a specific manner to enhance its flavor and provide a full multi-sensory experience. Megan Rushman, the brand’s associate product development scientist, explained that the malted interior serves a dual purpose.
Not only does it contribute to the satisfying crunch characteristic of Maltesers, but it also aids in breaking down the chocolate, preventing the sticky sensation sometimes experienced with solid chocolate sticking to the roof of the mouth. To maximize the flavor experience, Megan suggests placing the entire Malteser in your mouth before biting down.
This method ensures that the chocolate covers a larger area of the palate, creating a multi-sensory experience by stimulating both taste receptors and the sense of hearing with the distinctive crunch. The unveiling coincides with the launch of Maltesers’ new white chocolate variant. Megan added, “It’s the unique texture and balance between the chocolate and the malt center that makes this sweet treat so iconic and beloved by many.”
A survey of 2,000 Maltesers enthusiasts revealed that those who deviate from the ‘official’ advice by sucking on the ball do so because they enjoy how the malt dissolves in their mouth. Another 23 percent savor this method to prolong the experience.
Individuals who prefer to nibble mentioned that they enjoy the dual bursts of flavor, while 24 percent like to take their time with the treat. On average, respondents believe that 22 seconds is the perfect duration to relish the taste.
While 53 percent argue that room temperature is ideal, 31 percent prefer to enjoy Maltesers chilled straight from the fridge. Fans also declared that the best time to indulge in Maltesers is between 7 pm and 9 pm – preferably while watching TV (57 percent) or as a post-dinner delight (20 percent).
Joining the discussion were Kate Lawler and Boj, who shared their opinions on the optimal way to consume Maltesers through lighthearted banter. Kate remarked, “As a nation, we love a food debate, and it’s no different in my house. Boj insists on nibbling the outside, while I prefer to pop one in and give it a crunch. Science might support my approach, but honestly, whether you nibble, let them melt, or crunch them whole, figuring it out is all part of the fun.”
