“Lidl Named Most Economical Supermarket, Beating Aldi Again”

Date:

Lidl has secured the title of the most economical supermarket according to Which? for the second time recently, outperforming Aldi.

In October, a selection of 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46, or £120.38 for members of Lidl Plus. The same items at Aldi cost £121 on average.

Despite Aldi being named the cheapest supermarket 22 out of the last 24 months, the analysis by Which? indicated that Lidl had the edge this time. The comparison included various items like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For Tesco customers, the total bill was £134.89 last month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard. Sainsbury’s shoppers would have spent £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card.

Which? didn’t include Aldi and Lidl in the comparison of 187 items due to their smaller product range. Asda emerged as the most budget-friendly option for a larger shopping list at £469.11, followed by Tesco Clubcard holders at £476.11 and Morrisons More loyalty card users at £481.34.

Waitrose stood out as the priciest choice for both small and large shopping lists. The analysis factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts but excluded multi-buy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on Lidl’s victory, highlighting Asda’s competitive pricing and the importance of price comparison for significant savings, especially during the upcoming holiday season.
