Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Menzies Campbell Passes at 84

Date:

Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies ‘Ming’ Campbell has passed away at the age of 84. Known as Ming, he led the Liberal Democrats from 2006 to 2007 and served as an MP for 28 years. A former sprinter in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he was nicknamed The Flying Scotsman and even outpaced American athlete OJ Simpson in the 100m event.

Sir Menzies was a prominent figure in Parliament, especially during the 2003 Iraq invasion and its aftermath, where he vocally criticized Tony Blair’s decision to join the American-led coalition to remove Saddam Hussein. His leadership, alongside charismatic leader Charles Kennedy, led the party to its best general election performance since the era of David Lloyd George.

Although Sir Menzies became party leader at 64, he resigned after 19 months due to persistent criticism regarding his age and perceived inability to adapt to modern media demands. Despite his extensive experience in foreign affairs, he struggled during Prime Minister’s Questions and faced challenges in connecting with the public due to his formal demeanor.

Prior to his political career, Sir Menzies excelled in athletics, holding the British 100m record for seven years. He transitioned to law and aspired to become a judge, emphasizing his identity as a lawyer first and politician second. Born in Glasgow during World War II, his early life included academic achievements and active participation in running and university politics.

Sir Menzies’ tenure as the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on foreign affairs was marked by his principled opposition to the Iraq War, demonstrating his moral courage and wisdom. His leadership during challenging times, including the aftermath of 9/11, earned him respect within the party and across political circles. Known for his warmth and humor, Sir Menzies will be dearly missed by the Liberal Democrat community and beyond.

The party mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant and influential figure in UK politics, remembering Sir Menzies ‘Ming’ Campbell as a true Liberal giant whose legacy will endure.
