Originally, Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, was intended to challenge top F1 drivers for a championship. However, the revised script now sees him making a comeback in his 50s, driving for the struggling fictional team APX GP alongside young talent Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris.
The change in storyline occurred after a dinner meeting involving Wolff, Hamilton, and others in the early stages of the project. Wolff shared the surreal experience of having Pitt unexpectedly show up at their Oxford gathering, expressing gratitude for the invitation.
During the development phase, Lewis Hamilton advised that Pitt’s character was too old to realistically compete in Formula One, which Brad Pitt found displeasing as he believed he was still in his prime for the role. The script adaptation that followed was well-received for its credibility in portraying Pitt’s character.
The F1 movie, where Hamilton serves as an executive producer, received critical acclaim, generated excitement among new fans, and set box office records, becoming the most successful sports film globally with earnings of £467 million ($628 million).
