“Labour Leader Starmer Leads Push for Peace in Gaza”

Date:

Labour leader Keir Starmer hailed a significant moment in global efforts for peace in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of avoiding any missteps. Following the signing of a peace plan by Donald Trump, Starmer highlighted the critical phase of implementation facing Gaza. He mentioned the potential involvement of former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair on the peace board chaired by the US President.

Starmer emphasized the need for action in the coming days, focusing on the United Kingdom’s role in monitoring the ceasefire and assisting in disarming Hamas, drawing from experiences in Northern Ireland. He stressed the urgency of moving forward with the peace process without errors.

The Labour leader participated in the Gaza peace deal signing event in Egypt with US President Donald Trump and other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni. This gathering marked a pivotal initial step towards peace in the Middle East, co-hosted by Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

The summit coincided with the release of 20 Israeli hostages who had been held captive for two years, as part of a prisoner exchange agreement with Israel. Notably, Avinatan Or, one of the freed hostages, was abducted at the Nova festival in 2023.

Starmer expressed relief over Or’s release and condemned the ordeal suffered under Hamas captivity. He extended sympathy to Or’s family and others affected by similar events. Starmer praised the diplomatic efforts of the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, underscoring the need for collective action to implement Trump’s Gaza peace plan.

Furthermore, a top US official commended the UK’s pivotal role, particularly acknowledging the contributions of National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell. The UK’s involvement behind the scenes was recognized by Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, despite some contrasting remarks from the US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee.

The UK’s critical participation in shaping the peace process was acknowledged by various officials, setting the groundwork for ongoing diplomatic endeavors towards lasting peace in the region.
