Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has committed to meeting with victims of Britain’s radiation experiments after 435 days since their initial request. This promise came following a BBC reporter’s challenge to uphold Starmer’s commitment to nuclear veterans. Starmer acknowledged the victims’ plight as a real injustice and expressed willingness to meet them by the end of the year.
The victims sought a meeting to address the Nuked Blood Scandal, which was exposed by the Mirror, revealing human radiation experiments on military personnel. Blood and urine samples were taken during Cold War weapons tests, with records of the results being concealed. Denials of the program’s existence were made by government officials, ministers, and lawyers for many years.
Thames Valley Police is currently conducting a significant review into allegations of widespread misconduct in public office related to these events. The Mirror informed Starmer about the scandal in September 2023, prompting his request to stay updated on the investigation.
Despite previous attempts by campaigners to secure a meeting with Starmer, including reaching out after the election, they received no response. A video highlighting Labour ministers’ promises of compensation has garnered nearly 9 million views. Starmer, upon learning of the veterans’ quest for a meeting, expressed his intent to follow up on it.
John Morris, an Operation Grapple veteran impacted by health issues from his involvement in the experiments, believes Starmer is genuine about meeting them, attributing the lack of communication to the Establishment’s interference. LABRATS founder Alan Owen proposed a special tribunal solution for the Prime Minister, stressing the urgency due to the advanced age of the veterans.
The veterans’ advocates emphasize the need for dialogue with Starmer to avoid costly legal proceedings and have prepared solutions for a potential resolution.
