Keir Starmer has criticized Israel’s actions in targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar as “completely unacceptable” during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
Following the discussions, a spokesperson from Downing Street labeled the bombings a “flagrant violation” and highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The meeting had sparked outrage prior to the Israeli military striking top Hamas officials in Doha while they were convening to discuss a proposed ceasefire for Gaza.
After the meeting, a Downing Street spokesperson stated: “He denounced Israel’s actions in Doha as completely unacceptable. He emphasized that the strikes infringed on the sovereignty of a crucial partner and hinder efforts toward achieving the peace we all seek.”
“Regarding Gaza, he expressed deep concern and urged Israel to change its approach. It was stressed that Israel must prevent the worsening of the manmade famine by allowing aid access and ceasing offensive operations. The leaders agreed on the urgent need for the release of hostages taken by Hamas almost two years ago.”
During Prime Minister’s Questions, the PM condemned the strikes as a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and detrimental to peace efforts, expressing support and solidarity with the Emir of Qatar in pursuing a diplomatic resolution for a ceasefire and a two-state solution.
In response to criticism, Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer downplayed the notion that the UK had given special treatment to the Israeli president, stating that President Herzog’s visit was private and not a formal state visit.
After their meeting, Mr. Herzog described it as a frank discussion between allies, acknowledging differences but emphasizing a shared understanding of the threats posed by extremists as democratic nations.
