Jockey Clifford Lee Emerges from Coma After Accident

Date:

Top jockey Clifford Lee has emerged from an induced coma following a motorcycle accident during his vacation. The 29-year-old sustained a neck fracture after falling headfirst and was swiftly taken to the hospital last week. With a career milestone of 94 wins, Lee faces an extended period off the racing track, as confirmed by his employer Karl Burke.

Burke expressed optimism about Lee’s progress, stating, “He is now out of the induced coma, which is a positive step. He will undergo surgery to address the fractures. He is resilient, and we hope he will successfully navigate the operation, leading to a smooth recovery.”

In a notable achievement in August, Lee clinched the Prix Morny at Deauville riding Venetian Sun, adding to his string of victories this summer aboard horses like Royal Champion, Al Qareem, and Convergent.

Although on a suspension during his break in Greece and subsequent trip to Scotland with his family, Lee, known for his recent winning streak, had the unfortunate accident while riding a cross-country bike.

Burke, unaware of Lee’s motorcycle hobby, learned of the incident on a Sunday morning, acknowledging the severity of the situation but also acknowledging it could have been worse.

Throughout 2025, Lee’s horses amassed a total of £2.3 million in earnings in Britain, with Al Qareem alone securing £237,857 from four triumphs. Originating from south-east London, Lee, not from a racing background, has showcased his exceptional pace judgment in notable victories like the Cambridgeshire.

Supportive messages have flooded in for Lee, currently hospitalized in Edinburgh. Fans have expressed hopes for his swift recovery, recognizing his outstanding performances during the season and anticipating a bright future for him in the racing world.
