Fortunately, Apple has implemented robust security measures, such as Stolen Device Protection, making it challenging for thieves to use stolen iPhones. Despite these safeguards, some criminals attempt to bypass these security features. If an iPhone is stolen, individuals should be cautious of messages claiming that the device has been located.
Criminals have devised a cunning strategy to circumvent features like Activation Lock, a security mechanism that ties an iPhone to the owner’s Apple ID, rendering it unusable and unsellable. By sending personalized texts with links resembling official Apple websites, scammers aim to trick owners into divulging crucial codes, granting access to personal data and allowing them to wipe the device for resale.
The National Cyber Security Centre in Switzerland warns that scammers are leveraging detailed information about the stolen device to make their messages appear authentic. While the exact method of obtaining users’ phone numbers remains uncertain, potential avenues include accessing data from SIM cards or exploiting Apple’s Find My feature, which allows owners to display contact details on lost devices’ lock screens.
To safeguard iPhone users, the NCSC has issued five key recommendations to follow in case of theft. It is essential to remember that Apple will never initiate contact to request personal information or prompt users to click on suspicious links. If an iPhone is stolen, users should refrain from engaging with unsolicited messages, avoid clicking on unknown links, and take immediate action by activating Lost Mode through the Find My app to lock the device.
