After Michelle Tolley received recognition at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her advocacy work, she received an unexpected surprise. The 60-year-old activist, who humorously refers to herself as “59 plus one,” has dedicated herself to seeking justice for the over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal.
Last year, Michelle, along with fellow campaigners Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, was honored with a Pride of Britain Special Recognition Award. During the awards ceremony, while standing alongside other winners, Michelle witnessed midwife Agnes Nisbett being awarded a cruise holiday by P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor of the event. To everyone’s astonishment, it was announced that all 2024 winners would also receive the same prize.
The joy of the unexpected gift was a stark contrast to Michelle’s years of battling health issues and advocating for fellow victims while holding the government accountable. Michelle contracted hepatitis C through a blood transfusion after giving birth to her first child in 1987. She endured 28 years of sickness and fatigue, disregarded by a physician, before receiving a diagnosis and starting treatment.
Determined to turn her anger into positive action, Michelle founded a support group, collaborated with the Hepatitis C Trust, and provided testimony at the official government inquiry. After years of relentless dedication, the prospect of a leisurely vacation was a welcomed respite for Michelle and her husband Dean, who hadn’t traveled abroad since their wedding in 1984.
Michelle shared her excitement about booking a Canary Islands cruise holiday with P&O Cruises, contemplating renewing their vows during the trip. Much to her surprise, the cruise company organized a vow renewal ceremony for the couple, complete with flowers, photographs, and special meals.
Embarking on the Ventura cruise ship, Michelle, whose only previous sailing experience was as a child, was overwhelmed by the luxury and amenities offered. The couple indulged in the onboard dining, shopping, pools, and entertainment while exploring Madeira and the Canary Islands.
Their adventures ashore included a taxi tour in Madeira and a tuk-tuk tour in Las Palmas, embracing the local culture and history with each excursion. Michelle and Dean concluded their holiday with a coach and river cruise in Lisbon, marveling at the city’s sights and landmarks.
