“Greece Hit by Severe Weather Chaos”

Date:

Holidaymakers from Britain are dealing with the aftermath of severe weather that caused damage to a popular vacation spot, resulting in flooded houses and cars floating in Greece. Pictures capturing the chaos in Greece have circulated on social media as locals rush to salvage belongings before the next round of storms hits. In Corfu, a British family’s car became stranded on a hilly road, requiring local emergency services to rescue them.

In other areas like Oiniades, Aitoliko, and Nechori, heavy flooding and landslides have caused residents to be trapped in their homes, while school closures in Zakynthos and Rhodes aim to ensure the safety of students and staff during the harsh weather. Workers and students in Athens enjoyed an unexpected long weekend due to the annual feast of the city’s patron saint, as authorities encouraged people to stay home amidst the stormy conditions.

Greece is bracing for another 48 hours of extreme weather, with hailstorms and heavy rain expected to persist until Friday morning. Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafilias cautioned that the upcoming storm could bring severe thunderstorms, gale-force winds, a significant temperature drop, and even snow on Mount Kaimaktsalan. The weather deterioration is set to begin on Thursday and spread across the country by Friday.

Parts of Greece, especially western and northern regions and eastern Aegean areas, are forecasted to experience severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, gale-force winds in the Ionian and southern Aegean seas, and light snow at the Kaimaktsalan ski resort. Following recent flash floods, further downpours are expected to turn into snow in Western Macedonia, while Thrace, the Aegean, and Crete are likely to face heavy rainfall and storms.

Recent days have seen Italy and Spain also impacted by intense Mediterranean storms. Ibiza, a popular holiday destination, was put on an “extraordinary danger” red alert due to Storm Gabrielle passing over the Balearics. Troops were dispatched to the island, and the Civil Guard reported rescuing 148 individuals from flooded properties and stranded vehicles.

This series of extreme weather events has affected multiple countries, emphasizing the need for preparedness and response measures to safeguard lives and property.
