Formula 1 Teams Enter Mandatory Shutdown Period

Date:

Formula 1 teams have entered the mandatory ‘shutdown’ period after a week into the summer break of the season. The shutdown, which began on August 11, prohibits any Formula 1-related activities for a continuous 14-day period as mandated by the FIA.

During this period, all performance-related work, including activities in wind tunnels, simulators, and design tinkering, is strictly off-limits. Even discussions or correspondence regarding performance aspects are prohibited, with heavy penalties for violations. However, non-performance staff like marketing and legal departments can continue working.

While performance-related work is halted, essential operations such as site maintenance are allowed to ensure facilities are in top condition. This period not only helps teams manage their expenditure within the budget cap but also prioritizes staff well-being, providing a much-needed break for personnel who work tirelessly throughout the hectic racing calendar.

The shutdown will conclude on Sunday, August 24, just before the Dutch Grand Prix marks the start of the second part of the season. Following this break, teams will gear up for the remaining 10 race weekends in a compact 15-week timeframe.

Additionally, there is a second mandatory shutdown period after the season ends, starting on December 24. This break allows staff to spend time with their families during the festive season before ramping up preparations for the upcoming year.
