An expert has raised concerns about a little-known driving mistake that could lead to legal issues with the authorities, causing confusion among drivers regarding the rules. Many vehicles are equipped with ‘space saver’ tires stored in the trunk for emergency situations involving punctures.
These temporary spare tires are designed to be smaller and lighter than standard wheels, serving as a temporary fix to reach a repair facility. Typically, using a space saver tire limits the vehicle’s speed to a maximum of 50mph.
However, according to advice from UK vehicle leasing company Select Car Leasing, there is a lesser-known regulation regarding space saver tires that many drivers fail to understand. Some space saver tires are intended for use either on the front or rear of the vehicle, depending on the car’s type and whether it is front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, to prevent issues such as brake interference, transmission damage, and compromised steering.
Graham Conway, the managing director at Select Car Leasing, emphasized the importance of knowing how to properly use a space saver tire in case of an emergency. He highlighted that while some modern cars no longer come with space saver tires and instead provide repair kits, it is crucial to comprehend the correct usage of space savers if they are present.
The AA, a breakdown assistance organization, cautions that temporary spare tires may be restricted to either the front or rear of the vehicle for safety reasons. Specialists also recommend a specific tire movement strategy for front-wheel-drive vehicles with flat front tires to ensure optimal traction and safety.
Mr. Conway advised drivers to be confident in changing a tire before considering using a space saver and to avoid changing tires on motorways due to safety concerns. He stressed that space saver tires are only a temporary solution to get the vehicle back on the road to reach a repair facility.
While not illegal, incorrectly mounting a space saver tire on a vehicle may prompt police intervention to provide guidance. Select Car Leasing warned drivers to exercise extreme caution when driving with a space saver tire as it significantly affects the vehicle’s handling capabilities.
